Each and every night in San Diego, there are over 800 homeless youth living on our streets. San Diego has the sixth highest number of homeless youth of all major cities in the country, and the majority of these kids are on the streets through no fault of their own. Very often, their parents have a mental illness or addiction. Sometimes they have been kicked out of their homes because they revealed they were gay. The saddest and most frustrating reality is that there are only a few beds in shelters available for these youth. We must do better.
Another significant barrier to helping these youth is their lack of trust in the “system.” Taking the time to build this trust is essential to connecting them with the services they need to get them off the streets. Doors of Change builds this trust through our award-winning program, “Taking Music & Art to the Streets.” By providing free music and art instruction, a meal, shoes and clothing, medical evaluations, and other social services, we are able to build the rapport necessary for these young people to seek and accept more help and assistance. As a result, Doors of Change has helped place over 1,800 homeless youth in safe housing over the past 15 years.
Now, Doors of Change is preparing to celebrate the one-year anniversary of our Housing Program for Self-Sufficiency, which offers a path to help homeless youth leave the streets permanently. Thanks to this program’s safe and comfortable housing, counseling and case management, access to health care, mental health and addiction treatment, job training and placement assistance, mentorship, and other community services, residents leave us well-positioned to live successfully and independently in the community. We are proud to be doing this work, yet there is so much more to be done.
To raise critical funds for our lifesaving programs, Doors of Change will host its annual gala on April 22, 2017, at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa. This “Celebration of Hope” will be an event you will never forget! You will have the opportunity to meet some of the youth we serve, enjoy a deeply moving musical program, and hear from JC, our first housing program graduate. JC has been clean and sober from meth for two years, lives in his own apartment, has been working for more than a year, and has $5,000 in the bank. What a role model JC is! In addition, you will enjoy a delicious dinner, an open bar, a spectacular auction and great live music. Please join us!
Please show your support by attending our gala on April 22. Your participation will save lives. Tickets go on sale on January 6, 2017.
